Development of Rapid Hepatitis Screening Panel for hepatitis elimination by 2030

চিহ্নিত সমস্যা এবং প্রস্তাবিত সমাধান

Hepatitis is both acute and chronic liver inflammation among world’s population through infection by several viruses. It’s a very common among diverse population (children to elderly) in Bangladesh as viral transmission occurs via enteric (oral) route and parenterally through contaminated scissors, syringes and other medical and dental instruments, and also during unprotected sexual intercourse. Among the common viral agents, HAV and HEV cause recoverable acute hepatitis while HBV and HCV are responsible for chronic infection followed by liver cirrhosis and cancer. Hence, Bangladesh is facing difficulties and huge financial burden with a large pool of hepatitis patients. In July, 2016, WHO has adopted targets unanimously to significantly curtail HBV and HCV to near extinction by 2030. In Bangladesh, hepatologists, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), civil society, and patients have joined hands with the government in this global fight against viral hepatitis. There has been major expansion in access to tertiary health care while several NGOs are active in this field over the last several years. However, quality diagnostics for viral screening are still absent in all over the country and it requires developing novel device to obtain country-wide scenario of viral hepatitis within a short time.

With this present diagnostic drawback, achieving the target of elimination by 2030 appears to be challenging in Bangladesh. The ground is all set for appropriate interventions, if novel reliable diagnostic platform can be established; the target may well be achievable. Hence, we are proposing a faster, low cost and safe viral detection solution through local production of quality rapid screening panel for four major viral diseases in a single kit. Furthermore, to reduce time requirement and improve coordination, we will use Android, iOS and web applications to ensure prompt screening report sharing between clinical settings and community hospitals around the country. This novel innovation also has huge potential to be incorporated at the community clinical services for the semi-urban and rural communities of Bangladesh. The benefits of this system as with all rapid test include reduction in time and cost. Furthermore, the rapid test when incorporated with the national database will help in providing further interventions.
